Hiyoshiya Contemporary: modern lighting by the ultimate Kyoto umbrella maker

Established nearly 150 years ago, Hiyoshiya is actually the only producer of traditional Kyo-wagasa, Kyoto-style umbrellas. All this time, the company has been working with bamboo and washi paper to create finest umbrellas for use at tea ceremony gatherings, Noh and Kabuki theatre plays and other aspects of traditional Japanese culture.

Recently, Hiyoshiya started new collections of modern lighting products using traditional umbrella-making materials and techniques.

Working closely with designers, Hyoshiya has developed KOTORI, a collection of pendant and floor lights that combine traditional techniques & materials and modern design, and MOTO, a collection of airy light shades. These elegant and highly crafted lights are built around umbrella-like frames allowing them to be easily folded and shipped.
